Skip Hire FAQ

We’ve made the process of hiring a skip as simple as possible. In addition, we’ve created this guide to help you through the process and to answer any questions you might have. If you have further queries, however, please contact a member of our specialist skip hire team as we’re here to help.

Your Questions Answered

How do I place an order for a skip?

To hire a skip, please call us on 020 8963 4070. A member of our team will recommend the best solution for your needs and will guide you through the skip hire process. Questions we’ll ask you include the size of skip you think you’ll need, what you plan to put in it, where the skip will be placed, and if there are licence requirements.

Once you place your order, we’ll deliver and collect the skip as requested.

How much does a skip cost?

The cost of skip hire depends on the size of skip and your location. The contents of the skip can impact the price too as there are some items that are not regarded as general waste so may incur additional recycling charges. This includes mattresses and hazardous waste. Contact us today for more help and advice.

Where can I put my skip?

Your skip should be in a convenient location for easy filling. There are guidelines we must follow, however – see details below. Our sales team and skip lorry drivers can also give you specific advice.

  • We can’t put skips in locations that require our lorry to cross grass areas.
  • Our lorries need dropped kerbs to access sites.
  • We can’t place skips on council-owned land or on footpaths. Your skip can, however, be placed on a public highway.
  • You should not put a skip on soft ground, uneven ground, or ground with block or slab paving. Doing so is at your own risk.

Gowing & Pursey cannot be held responsible for damage to customers’ property or premises if the ground or site is not suitable for an HGV.

How full can my skip be?

You should not fill higher than the sides of the skip and the contents should be level. This enables us to transport the skip safely and in accordance with all road laws. In general, weight is not a problem as our skip lorries can lift as much as eight tonnes. An example of where weight could become an issue, though, is if you fill the skip with soil which then becomes heavier due to rain. In situations like this where our lorry can’t lift the skip, or if your skip is overloaded, you’ll have to remove some of the contents. If you have queries on this point or would like clarification, please contact a member of our team on 020 8963 4070.

How long can I keep my skip for?

You can hire a Gowing & Pursey skip for up to five working days. You decide when it should be dropped off and picked up. If you need longer than five days, please speak to a member of our team. We’ll do our best to come up with a solution.

What size skip do I need?

Have a look at the Gowing & Pursey skip guide. It details our skip sizes to help you decide what you need. You can also call to get professional advice from a member of our team.

  • 6 yard skip can hold approximately 50-60 black bin bags
  • 8 yard skip can hold approximately 60-80 black bin bags
  • 12 yard skip can hold approximately 100-120 black bin bags
  • 16 yard skip holds approximately 150 black bin bags
  • 20 yard skip holds approximately 180 black bin bags
What happens to my waste?

After picking up your skip the lorry will return to our Park Royal recycling centre. The contents are sorted into different materials ready for recycling with each skip load analysed and photographed. Nothing goes to landfill as we recycle everything. Reports are available too, if required. Find out more about our recycling process on our recycling page.

Do I need a licence or flashing lights?

By law, you’ll need a skip licence or permit if the skip will be located on a public highway. The skip will also need lights if it’s on a public road while it’s dark. You can find more information on licence and permit requirements on our skip licence page.
